Empowering Youth to Break the Cycle: How Our Comprehensive Approach is Changing Lives

In the face of adversity, every young person deserves a chance to thrive. Through our Outreach, Advocacy, and Support program, we are empowering youth ages 12-26 who are exhibiting criminal behaviors to break free from cycles of crime and build brighter futures.

Our team of dedicated Youth Advocates provides individualized support, addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by each young person. From self-identified goal setting and crisis resolution to navigating the justice system and accessing essential resources, our Advocates work tirelessly to create alternatives to crime and foster healthy, responsible adulthood.

Take the story of Joseph who was constantly getting into trouble at school, home, and in the community. The Youth Reintegration Advocate started visiting him when he was incarcerated at the Calgary Young Offender Centre, and was able to build a meaningful relationship with him. When he was released from incarceration, the Youth Reintegration Advocate continued to meet with him regularly, working together on his goals.

This young person mentioned that he kept getting into trouble because he was bored and didn’t have anything to do. Recognizing this, the Youth Reintegration Advocate was able to purchase him a YMCA membership to help keep him busy and engaged during the summer. The youth reported that the gym membership in addition to having a positive activity that filled gaps in his day provided him with a constructive outlet when he felt overwhelmed, and he has stayed out of trouble since receiving this support.

We’ve seen similar success with youth like Samantha, who struggled to trust authority figures and often found herself expelled from programs. Our Youth Advocate built a rapport with Samantha during her time in the Calgary Young Offender Centre, creating a safe space for open communication. Upon her release, the Advocate continued to provide consistent support, helping Samantha bridge the gap with her other service providers, mend relationships and access the resources she needed.

By offering a wide range of tailored supports – from goal-setting and crisis resolution to cultural reconnection and recreational opportunities – our Youth Advocates are equipping young people with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges and make positive choices. As exemplified by the stories of Joseph and Samantha, this holistic, person-centered approach is transforming lives and fostering a safer, more inclusive community.
