Restorative Solutions to Conflict: Transforming Lives for a Safer Community

Thomas, a young man in his early 20s, found himself facing serious fraud charges that could have landed him in prison for up to 14 years. Instead of going through the traditional justice system, Thomas was referred to the Restorative Solutions to Conflict program at CJHS.

The program helped Thomas take accountability for his actions. He had stolen over $13,000 from his employer to feed his addiction. In a facilitated meeting, Thomas met with five members of the company he had wronged and apologized, taking full responsibility.

To Thomas’s surprise, the company did not demand repayment or punishment. They reported feeling that their needs had been met. Instead, they asked him to focus on his sobriety and caring for his family. With this compassionate approach, Thomas was able to turn his life around.

After a year of sobriety, the charges against Thomas were withdrawn, and he was given a clean slate with no criminal record. Two years later, Thomas is thriving. He has maintained his sobriety, reconnected with his loved ones, and is positively contributing to his community.

Thomas’s story demonstrates the power of restorative justice. By providing a platform for accountability, amends, and rehabilitation, the Restorative Solutions program is transforming lives and creating a safer, more just community.
