Housing Outreach Program

Innovative Approaches to Housing Stability

Since joining the Adult Housing Reintegration Program (AHRP) in 2016, JC has experienced significant changes in his housing journey. After being placed in three different housing situations from 2018 to the present, JC’s current placement has proven to be a remarkable success.

In the past, being under the influence of alcohol impacted JC’s interactions with his neighbours and landlord. This resulted in his lease not being renewed or eviction. JC was able to work through these challenges with the support of his Caseworker by learning healthy coping mechanisms, how to effectively deal with conflict and manage his alcohol use.

His landlord has recognized JC’s commitment to maintaining his housing and has agreed to renew his lease for another three months. Under the guidance of his Caseworker, JC has consistently paid his rent on time, maintained a clean-living environment, and demonstrated exemplary behavior with no guest management or housing concerns.

JC’s journey reflects his growth and independence as he prepares to transition out of the AHRP program. He has expressed readiness to graduate and has been working on following a realistic budget to maintain his living expenses independently. If required, JC will be supported with a transfer application to the Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) Graduated Rental Subsidy Program (GRSP).

Pathways to Progress

This story is an inspiring journey toward rehabilitation and self-improvement. ZM has been part of the Roofs for Youth (R4Y) scattered-site housing program since February 2023. Since their involvement in the housing program, they’ve established a strong relationship with their caseworker and have maintained housing stability, only moving once due to their own choice and not because they were forced to. With ongoing support from the R4Y staff, ZM is diligently working to complete their probation by actively engaging in counseling and utilizing professional support services. As part of their release plan, ZM enrolled in and completed the CJHS employment program (LEEP). They are also being supported by CJHS’s New Ties and Keegan HELP Fund to support with the cost of tattoo removal.

Currently, ZM is pursuing full-time employment, actively distributing resumes while awaiting additional training opportunities. As of March 31, 2024, ZM proudly celebrates 1 year and 4 months of sobriety, a significant milestone achieved with the encouragement of both natural and professional support networks. ZM’s dedication to personal growth exemplifies the positive impact of creative solutions in our crime prevention efforts.
